NEW TRAWLING RULES IN EFFECT FOR DARE COUNTY

MOREHEAD CITY - Fishermen need to be aware of new trawling restrictions in the Dare County area.

On Aug. 1, new designations for secondary and special secondary nursery areas went into effect in several areas of the state. Secondary nursery areas are permanently closed to shrimp trawling and special secondary nursery areas are also closed to trawling but can be opened by proclamation between Aug. 16 and May 14 of each year, if conditions warrant the change.

New restrictions are in place for the following water bodies:

  • Inner Shallowbay Bay is now a permanent secondary nursery area. Trawling is prohibited year-round.

  • Outer Shallowbag Bay is a special secondary nursery area and will reopen to trawling on Aug. 16.

  • Kitty Hawk Bay/Buzzards Bay is a special secondary nursery area, but will remain closed to trawling until spring peeler crab trawling begins.

For more information on these new rules, please contact Beth Burns with the Division of Marine Fisheries in Wanchese at 252-473-5734.
