Fish at the bottom of the Deep Hole

Down at the bottom of The Great Deep Hole lurks a sinister looking fellow. Many would quickly label him the ugliest fish in the sea.

His eyes look like they will jump right out of his head, and his teeth....ooohhhhh his teeth! His big ugly mouth is full of chomping sharp teeth. Rumor has it that if he bites your finger he won't let go until lightning strikes! Of course I also hear that turtles, frogs, and my pet cat Orbit won't let go until lightning strikes either.

He is called Opsanus tau or as you and I know him...oyster toadfish, or mud toad, or oyster cracker, or just plain oyster toad. Rumor has it that he has a mean cousin called the "Easter Toad" who comes to see bad little boys and girls at the same time the Easter Bunny brings baskets.

That may or may not be true, but this is a fact...anyone who ever catches one doesn't soon forget an oyster toad. And if you fish in coastal North Carolina you will catch an oyster toad. It may not be today. It may not happen tomorrow, but sooner or later you will catch one - or perhaps more exactly - he will catch you.

Many an angler has tangled with these fellows thinking he had hooked a giant croaker, or bluefish, or the worlds largest pinfish - only to be greeted by this wigglin', jumpin', flippin', snappin' monster. While some folks say they might grow to be 15 inches long - they seem like they are 15 feet long when you have them on the line.
