Description of Work
The Marine Fisheries Technician II will conduct fieldwork for the statewide Oyster Sanctuary Program.  Duties in support of the Shellfish Rehabilitation Program include habitat construction and sampling operations, monitoring oyster recruitment, growth and survival, support of shellfish research, and data entry.  This position will procure and prepare materials, supplies and equipment for field operations. The technician will participate in oyster sanctuary construction operations including marking structure deployment locations, monitoring structure dimensions, documenting structure and environmental data.  The technician will adhere to approved construction plans, sampling protocols, ad use of safety gear and equipment. This position requires the ability to lift 75 lbs., operate and maintain vessels up to 33 feet in length including navigation with GPS systems, operate and maintain tow vehicles and trailers with vessels up to 26 feet in length and exceeding 10,000 lbs.  The operation and maintenance of heavy equipment such as tractors, forklifts, front-end loaders and dump trucks will be required.  Variable schedules including extended workdays, extended overnight stays and weekend work will sometimes be required.  This is an intensive field position with extensive on the water time required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of Oyster biology, estuarine and marine ecology, and estuarine species identification is required.
Ability to operate and maintain vehicles, boats, and trailers is required. Ability to operate and maintain heavy equipment is required. Computer experience and ability to learn computer applications, i.e. GIS, Excel, Microsoft Word, etc. A class A CDL may be required 9 months after employment.

Training and Experience
Graduation from a community or technical college with an associated degree in fisheries management and one year of experience in the fisheries industry including experience with vessel operation; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
