Description of Work
The Marine Fisheries Technician II will assist a biologist in data collection, compilation, and coding for all projects relating to monitoring and assessment of North Carolina river herring populations. The technician will be conducting a bridge, culvert, and impediment survey in the tributaries of the Albemarle Sound. This survey will include the identification, measuring, categorizing, and documenting of all potential blockages to migrating anadromous fishes. The employee will also be responsible for collecting all types of fishery dependent and independent data with extensive field sampling involved. The technician will collect data using various types of gears including, but no limited to seines, trawls, gill nets, and plankton nets. The employee will be required to identify, measure, weigh, remove ageing structures, and determine reproductive condition of finfish; tag finfish, compile, record, edit, and verify data; operate and maintain boats, motors, trailers, trucks, and all sampling equipment. Ability to effectively communicate with coworkers; ability to carry out responsibilities unaccompanied. The technician will also assist ongoing projects and programs as needed. **(This is a re-post. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of marine and freshwater species identification; thorough knowledge of recreational and commercial fisheries and associated fishing gear; ability to collect, compile, and organize data; ability to operate computers including word processing and spreadsheet software; ability to operate boats, motors, and trailers and perform general maintenance on them; must be able to obtain a valid North Carolina drivers license.
Training and Experience Requirements
Graduation from a community college or technical school with an associate’s degree in fisheries management and one year of experience in the fisheries industry including experience with vessel operation; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
