Description of Work: Position Description
Duties and responsibilities for the temporary R/V crewmember include:
- Routine maintenance such as scraping, chipping, sanding, and painting;
- Washing down and cleaning vessel and equipment;
- Handling lines and deck labor;
- Repairs to vessel and heavy equipment;
- Operation and maintenance of dump trucks and heavy equipment such as track and wheel driven front end loaders, cranes, and forklifts;
- Helm watches including relieving the captain while vessel is in open water; must be able to follow a predetermined course;
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
The ability to maintain large steel-hulled vessels; the ability to cut and weld metal; basic knowledge of diesel engine operation and maintenance; general deck and seamanship abilities; basic knowledge of the operation and maintenance of heavy trucks and equipment such as front-end loaders, cranes, and dump trucks; basic knowledge of vessel operations.
Minimum Training and Experience
Completion of grammar school and three years of experience in fishing activities similar to those conducted on research vessels operated by the State of North Carolina; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
